For our May 2022 shipment, we're picking one hard-to-find bottle from a legendary producer, and one underdog favorite from a winegrowing region you've probably never heard of—but will instantly want to know more once you pop the cork. These are wines to drink right now, not bottles for the cellar. Wines for rites of spring.

Franz Hirtzberger "Spitz" Grüner Veltliner Steinfeder 2019: Hirtzberger is, like, REVERED BY ALL. One of the most highly allocated, influential, lauded, etc., etc., producers in Austria's Wachau winegrowing region, Hirtzberger is well-known for honeyed, layered styles of Grüner Veltliner. Here, we get a look at one of the lightest bottlings in the estate's range—"Steinfeder" indicates a maximum alcohol of 11.5% and this version is basically Plato's ideal form of Grüner Veltliner, sourced from the coolest, western sector of Wachau canyon. Peppery and herbal with zingy acidity.

Les Vins de la Madone "Mémoire de Madone" Côtes du Forez 2020: Never heard of the Côtes du Forez? No worries, no one has. It's a tiny appellation near the headwaters of the Loire River, in France's Massif Central. The fun fact here is that its producers are devoted to Gamay. While much of the region lies on granite soils, there are rare threads of basalt running through it. Basalt Gamay is the appellation's rarest, and best. The "Mémoire de Madone"—a "memory" of the dormant Madone Volcano—is a beautiful example: it's biodynamic, savory, delightful Gamay. Drink it with a little chill.
