Sauvignon Blanc, Polz "Ried Theresienhohe" 2021

Sancerre, Marlborough, Styria…? While the first two regions have long held appeal for Sauvignon Blanc, Styria (Steiermark, and the Südsteiermark where this is from in particular) is only just starting to gain some traction here in the US. Located in southern Austria close to the border with Slovenia, Styria is covered with verdant hillsides and precipitous slopes. While we normally associate Austria with Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay (called Morillon here) are the dominant grapes in these warmer parts. Rich, grassy, and intensely aromatic, the Polz Therese is bursting with aromas of Thai basil and marijuana, befitting of the green landscape it’s grown in. Have with an arugula salad.
