Malvasia, Edi Kante 2019

Malvasia grown on limestone in the Carso area of northeastern Italy, right on the border with Slovenia. Edi Kante is considered something of a maniac, but his wines are refreshingly full of spirit and personality. Is he a painter, a poet, or a winemaker? He blasted out a cave underneath the family home to raise his wines in, and the walls are adorned with the scribbles of visitors. In an area known for some of the best (and most expensive) orange wines on the planet, Edi is making white wines of precision and verve. His 2019 Malvasia jumps out of the glass with aromas of jasmine and honeydew. There’s a soft roundness to the palate, but it comes to a close with salty phenolic bitterness in the finish. Truly a unique wine from a unique man.
