Aglianico is often referred to as the “Nebbiolo of the south” amongst Italian wine cognoscenti. Its prominent tannins, naturally high acidity, and long hang time are the cited reasons, but the best bottles also resemble Barolo and Barbaresco in their beguiling aromas and ability to age.
Aglianico del Vulture in Basilicata is one of the signature appellations for the grape, along with Taurasi in neighboring Campania. Both areas are dominated by volcanic soils and this bottling actually takes its name from the Titolo lava channel in which the vines for this wine are grown in. The local name for the mix of lava and ash is pozzolana. A gamy, meaty, and wild nose leads into a big and bruising palate. Will be terrific with a mushroom risotto or a decade in the cellar.
