9.23.26 Passopisciaro with Benjamin Franchetti
Andrea Franchetti, founder of Passopisciaro on Sicily’s Mount Etna, was raised by artists and left his home in Rome at 18, setting off by bicycle for Afghanistan. His winemaking career began at Tenuta di Trinoro, where he planted Bordeaux varieties in Tuscany’s Val d’Orcia. In 2000, he turned his attention south, founding Passopisciaro on one of wine’s most dramatic and unforgiving landscapes: the slopes of an active volcano.
Passopisciaro is the name of both village and winery, nestled on the northern slopes of Etna. In the mid-2000s, Franchetti started bottling single contrada wines that have helped emphasize the singularity of Etna's circumstances, and the wines are now coveted by collectors.
Andrea passed just before Christmas in 2021, and his son and heir Benjamin Franchetti now leads the visionary estate. Meet Benjamin and discover his family's legacy on the volcano through six wines at Compline this September 23.
