3.12.26 Domaine de la Pépière Tasting with Gwén Croix
Domaine de la Pépière put quality Muscadet on the map, so to speak. When Marc Ollivier took a few hectares of vines from his father and founded the domaine in the 1980s, Muscadet's bad rap was set in stone: it was a machine-made wine with little character and few redeeming features beyond a cheap price tag.
Marc Ollivier singlehandedly changed everything—he started working naturally with the Melon B grape, he brought artisan winemaking back to the region, and he rediscovered its incredible terroir. Pépière's single-vineyard bottling Clos des Briords is now a legend—despite its (still cheap!) price tag, it's one of the most mineral, subtle, and nervy white wines of France, produced from Melon B vines over 60 years of age.
When Marc retired in 2019, his long-time partner Rémi Branger and newcomer Gwén Croix took over the estate. Gwén brought biodynamics to the vineyards, and began to explore Muscadet's new Cru Communal sub-appellations, their differing soils, and their potential for even longer lees aging.
Domaine de la Pépière has long been one of Matt's favorites, and Gwén and Rémi continue to push this landmark producer to even greater heights! Come taste some of the coolest wines made in France.
Gwen is pouring four wines:
Muscadet "Clisson" 2022
Muscadet "Gras Mouton" 2023
Muscadet "Clos des Briords" 2023
Cabernet Franc "La Pepie" 2023
Time: 6:30-8pm
