The Clos de Beaujeu is one of the most iconic sites Sancerre, first mentioned in the 1300s as being a suitable spot for winemaking (as opposed to Burgundy, where the first mention of climats happened two centuries later). Interestingly, even at this time, when most of the appellation was actually planted to red grapes, Clos de Beaujeu gained its reputation on the strength of its white wines. Suffice it to say there’s a lot of history here. Gérard Boulay is one of the premier producers in all of Sancerre, based in the Chavignol village where the Clos de Beaujeu is located, and farms two parcels in the famed vineyard. One of them is referred to as Le Grand Clos (hence the Clos de Beaujeu on the label). This will make you rethink everything you thought you knew about Sauvignon Blanc and Sancerre. Jancis Robinson compares it to white Burgundy, and we agree- put some away in your cellar and forget about it for 10 years.
