The Douro is most associated with sweet and fortified Port wines, but recently shifting tides and declining popularity have increased the amount of still, un fortified wines we’ve seen. Frankly, this naturally scalding and arid area and its native varieties should be beacons for the rest of the winemaking world in dealing with climate change.
Pedro Coelho is a dynamo of this new frontier in Portugal, intent on making wines that reflect the graceful soul of the Douro and not the power and alcohol of yesteryear. His Trilho bottling is a blend of Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz, and Touriga Franca from steep schist and granite slopes in the Cima Corgo, widely regarded as the best subregion of the Douro. The 2018 melds the intensity of the Douro’s conditions with the honesty of Pedro’s approach to winemaking. Deep, dark, and grippy, but with an unadorned heart of fruit, this is an exciting glimpse into what modern day Portuguese winemaking looks like.
