Derthona is neither an appellation name nor a grape, but rather the Roman name for the modern Italian city of Tortona, around which the Colli Tortonesi DOC sprawls. In the early aughts producers were permitted to use the ancient name as a sort of fantasy label for their wines, and there’s hope that one day it will be a legal subzone in its own right. Anyway, Timorasso is the favored white grape here. It has extremely high acidity and quite a mineral character. The wines actually age remarkably well, but if you choose to drink now you’ll get a vibrant, floral, mineral-laden bottle. Don’t just drink Barolo and Barbaresco, Piedmontese whites are worth seeking out, too!
