Let’s break down Montée de Tonnerre, shall we? It’s a prestigious Premier Cru in Chablis, but also a sizable one, and it helps to break it down into segments to fully understand its scope. It actually is an umbrella Premier Cru, as three climats within it can be bottled under their own Premier Cru designation. Viewed from above, MdT looks like a fan or seashell. The narrowest part lies at the bottom of the incline, closest to the river. This area is called Bachelot. In the middle is Montée de Tonnerre itself. The northernmost, steepest part of the cru is divided into two parts- Pied D’Aloup in the northwest and Côte de Bréchain in the northeast. Just beyond this lies the Fyé Valley, which is the dividing line with the stretch of Grand Crus.
Sebastien Christophe sources his Montée de Tonnerre fruit from the Côte de Bréchain, where the vines face fully west, absorbing the warm afternoon sun.
