Although they’ve been around since the 2010 vintage, most consumers are still getting used to MGAs (Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva, basically a specific site name in Barbaresco or Barolo). Valeirano, which lies in the village of Treiso, is one of 66 in Barbaresco, although its soil makeup is almost identical to the Barolo village of Serralunga d’Alba in terms of percentage and porosity of its chalky white limestone and clay marl. That soil similarity bears out in the bottle, as this is a particularly sturdy Barbaresco with a refreshing acidity and an almost Sangiovese-esque woodsiness. This is purely classical Nebbiolo, aged in large botti, and 2019 is one of the best vintages this century, bound to go the distance but also surprisingly open right now.
