Chardonnay, Arnot-Roberts “Sanford and Benedict - 1971 Block” 2024
Sanford and Benedict is one of the indisputable grand cru sites in California (if we actually had such things). It was planted on its own roots in the early 1970s by Richard Sanford and Michael Benedict, who were adamant about the potential of Burgundian varieties Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in this east-west valley directly impacted by the Pacific.
Another one of our favorite winemaking duos in California is Duncan Meyers and Nathan Roberts, who have been making a range of exemplary wines from exemplary sites since the early 2000s. Since 2018 they’ve been working with old Wente clone Chardonnay from this special site, and even more so than their Watson Ranch bottling that we also love this is Chardonnay all about acidity and brightness, perched up on all fours and ready to pounce. Serve with fish and chips for a delightful pairing, or in place of premier cru Chablis for a sneaky blind.
