Swartland (translates to black land, referencing the dark color of the soils here) is the most exciting wine region in South Africa and Adi Badenhorst its whimsical leader. His winery, which doubles as his house, is zoo-like, with animals roaming everywhere and taxidermy displayed all over the walls. He sports a lengthy beard and a gregarious, almost outlandish personality. And he makes some of the best Chenin Blanc, aka Steen, anywhere in the world.
In Adi’s opinion, Dassiekop is the premier site for Chenin in all of South Africa. It’s a steep, terraced site 350 meters above sea level, with vines interspersed with fynbos (SA’s wild brush equivalent to garrigue). It’s a remarkable vineyard worked by a remarkable man. So what can we infer about the wine?
This is Chenin in full glory, waxy, round, but with scintillating acidity. It’s the wine version of Stone Cold Steve Austin- powerful and immensely muscular but surprisingly nice and friendly when out of the ring. Yellow fruit explodes and is followed by a lengthy tang. It can be intense at times but over the course of 3 hours might be the best friend you make this year. A simply outstanding example of what’s happening in South Africa at the moment.
