St. Laurent, Filomena “Ricci Vineyard” 2021

By day Luke Nio is the winemaker at Kivelstadt, one of our favorite Sonoma producers. His side hustle (with the immense help of his wife Kat) is making off-the-beaten-path wines from really cool vineyards. St. Laurent, or Sankt Laurent in Austria, is an offspring of Pinot and similarly hard to grow. It’s the most-planted red variety in Czechia, where it goes by the delicate and pleasing name Svatovavrinecke. The Ricci family were the first to plant the variety in the US and their vineyard has since become a much sought-after source of it. Luke makes his version with 50% carbonic maceration, and the wine is simultaneously brightly aromatic with a brooding and gamey side. If we were in Austria we might suggest serving alongside horse, but alas we’ll have to stick to substituting it any time you might otherwise pour Pinot.
