Sauvignon Gris, Jolie-Laide "San Benito” 2021
Scott Schultz moved to Napa to be the wine director at Thomas Keller’s Bouchon, but quickly caught the winemaking bug. Now he crafts the Jolie-Laide wines with his wife Jenny at Pax Mahle’s facility in Sebastopol. The wines are natural leaning and vary in personality every year, as evidenced by the new artists featured on his labels each vintage.
Sauvignon Gris gets little love as a variety (even though it’s the most delicious we’ve ever tasted off the vine!). Maybe that should change, as Scott turns this fruit from Paicines, east of Monterey, into an exhilarating wine. It’s ripping and refreshing, with notes of dried herbs, orange blossom, and honeysuckle. Few wines walk the tightrope between weight and refreshment well, but this does to magnificent effect.
