Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre, and Cinsaut from Saint Chinian, where continental France meets the Mediterranean. The town lies at the southern end of the Massif Central, yet is only 20 miles from the sea, and the summers are warm and long and the winters mild. Historically known mostly for carbonically macerated Carignan, but Isabelle Champart and her Champagne-bred husband show how pleasant the wines can be when made with care. Dominated by Syrah, the Causse du Bousquet bottling epitomizes the south of France. It’s sappy, black-fruited, jovial wine.
