Thermenregion lies south of Vienna where warm air collects in the Pannonian basin. As of 2022 it’s the only wine growing region of Austria to have not obtained DAC status. Being too warm for Austrian favorites Riesling and Grüner Veltliner, growers here prefer Zierfandler and Rotgipfler, varieties which show pristine fall flavors of apples, baking spice, and bitter honey. Stadlmann’s single-vineyard “Ried Tagelsteiner” is a showcase example, big and waxy and made for a roast pork loin with rosemary applesauce.
