Rioja Reserva, Peciña “Finca Iscorta” 2010
Pedro Peciña was the longtime vineyard manager for La Rioja Alta, one of the truly classic producers of Rioja, and also one of the biggest. When Pedro returned to his family’s holdings, he was intimately aware of the best vineyard sites in this sprawling region, and made it his mission to acquire plots exclusively on the left bank of the Ebro River, where the elevations are a little higher and the soils a little chalkier than elsewhere. Classically classic Tempranillo winemaking, with lots of oxygen exposure, an emphasis on neutral American oak, and an extended aging period before release. There aren’t many wineries that are offering a 2010 as the current vintage in 2022, so snap this up while it’s still around.
Nutty and with a tobacco tarriness, this still shows the warm and enveloping dark fruit of Rioja. It’s just singing right now.
