Riesling GG, Wittmann “Aulerde” 2020
Many Grosses Gewächs wines taste manipulated, as if the juice didn’t want to quite finish fermenting to the point of being dry, but instead were subjected to this fate by winemakers using cultured yeasts or artificially warm temperatures or other nefarious means. However, coming across one that reveals the inherent personality of Riesling in all its aromatic glory while maintaining levels of dryness that feel harmonious with the body of the wine is cause for celebration. Wittmann is a storied surname and Aulerde a storied site, having first been documented as a vineyard site in 1380. Its soils are unusually deep for a slope so steep, and Philipp Wittmann’s 70+ year-old vines plunge these depths and emerge with berries of seemingly everlasting flavor. Bergamot oil, earl grey tea, rocky slate, za’atar, and a cascade of flowers and citrus.
