Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon, Leeuwin Estate "Art Series" 2017
Margaret River is perhaps the most Bordeaux-like of any Cabernet Sauvignon-producing region outside of France. It sits on a peninsula south of Perth that juts into the Indian Ocean, maintaining moderate temperatures and lending the wines an unmistakably oceanic quality. 2017 was a particularly cool and rainy year in Western Australia. At Leeuwin the conditions yielded a deftly nimble wine, rife with an herbaceous edge yet imbued with a core of dark fruit. Tannin management can often be a problem for Cabernet Sauvignon in years like that, but here they are friendly and inviting rather than harsh or green. This is great now, but should get even better over the next two decades.
