Maranges is the furthest south village in the entire Côte d’Or, unusual for facing almost entirely south as it’s one end of the most famous escarpment in wine. That southern exposure in the northern hemisphere means full days of sun exposure rather than just mornings or evenings, and the wines often take on sunnier dispositions than their neighbors to the north. Maybe that explains why the wines have never had an all too serious reputation, only gaining AOC status in 1988. In a world of ever-increasing Burgundy prices, that means it can still be an area rife with value, especially in the hands of an artisanal producer like Vincent Charleux.
