Salina is one of seven volcanic islands comprising the Aeolian Islands, situated northeast of Sicily. Capers are the most important crop for the roughly 15,000 inhabitants of the islands, and Antonino Caravaglio is both the largest grower of capers on the archipelago and making wildly distinctive wines from the Malvasia di Lipari variety native to these parts. (Don't confuse the variety with the Malvasia delle Lipari appellation, which is strictly for sweet wines from the islands). His home base of Salina takes its name from the saltwater lake at the southern tip of the landmass, and we'll let you guess what style of wine this is- salty, tangy, electric goodness.
