Many places claim ancient histories of winemaking. Quite literally nowhere in the world can claim to have as old a history as Vayots Dzor in Armenia, a narrow plateau in southwestern Armenia. It’s here where the Areni-1 cave complex was discovered in 2007, with evidence of winemaking as far back as 4100 BC. Sadly most modern development came to a halt with the end of privatized wineries in 1920 when the Soviets took over. Around 400 varieties are indigenous here, including the ungrafted Areni grown in the village of Khachik at elevations more than 5,000 feet above sea level. Keush makes a lean, pure, spicy and savory non-dosage wine in the traditional method from these hallowed grapes.
