The fact that this wine even exists is a miracle. Sisters Meike and Dörte Näkel were in their winery on July 14th, 2021 trying to salvage what they could from swelling floods. Eventually the whole winery flooded and the two sisters had to break a window to escape. They spent 11 hours clinging to a tree branch before being rescued. Their brand new winery and tasting room was destroyed. Legends with surnames like Prüm, Dönnhoff, and Rebholz came to help with recovery efforts, and the sisters ended up being able to make some wine in 2021.

The Ahr, a tributary of the Rhine, takes its name from the Celtic word aha, which means “running water”. It’s a cruelly ironic given recent events. Unlike most of the rest of winemaking Germany, it’s known for red wines, Pinot Noir in particular. “Illusion” is a blanc de noir, a white wine made from red grapes that have been pressed off their skins immediately after picking. From a year when Meyer-Näkel needed a helping hand just to keep existing, this wine does not offer that. It’s not immediately friendly and open. There’s dense texture and ripping acidity mixed with a whole orchard of stone fruit. It reflects the conditions from which it developed- challenging our notions of what great wine is in more ways than one.
