Laurent Combier is neighbors with the late Alain Graillot, arguably the most important name in Crozes-Hermitage. Whereas Graillot is known for his use of whole-cluster, Combier de-stems everything. They’re two different interpretations of the same grape from the same place, and both are great.
Combier’s top-level Clos des Grives bottling almost makes us think Hermitage more than its little brother. It’s meaty, sturdy, spicy, and dark but has a haunting perfumed elegance.
