Cinsaut, Craven 2022
Mick and Jeanine Craven met locally in Sonoma, where they fell in love and realized they had an affinity for making the same sorts of wines. They relocated to Jeanine’s homeland in the Stellenbosch and began sourcing fruit for their joint project, starting with the 2014 vintage. The results have been nothing short of spectacular, and the wines have become staples for us at Compline for their drinkability and affordability. Cinsaut doesn’t usually get much shine on its own. It’s one of the minor components in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and one of the parents of South African specialty Pinotage, but historically hasn’t made much of an impact in single-variety wines. Dry-farmed bush vine Cinsaut might be the remedy, as the Cravens turn that fruit into ebullient and expressive light-bodied red wine. Surely the most charming wine on the table.
