Brunello di Montalcino, Bolsignano 2016

Brunello of this quality at this price point is becoming a thing of yesteryear, sadly. Roberto Rubegni is a one-man show, making tiny amounts of Brunello and exquisite olive oil. His vineyards are abundant with life, with all manner of birds, insects, and small mammals flying and running around. The wines reflect that life- they are vivid, graceful, peaceful versions of Sangiovese. 2016 might be his best vintage yet, as it wears the warmth of the vintage confidently, but without the over-extraction and soupy alcohol of much modern Barolo. At this price, buy a few for your cellar, but don’t forget to enjoy one or two now. You’ll be happy.
