Gustavo Sotelo’s day job is making wines for Scribe. In his passion project, he and his wife Jackie pay homage to his Spanish heritage (his last name is a town in Galicia), seeking out Spanish varieties across California.
The Albor, or “First Light”, comes from Metate Hill vineyard in the Sierra Foothills. The sedimentary slate and schist soils are similar to those found in Rias Baixas, and the 60 % Albariño and 40% Godello blend is broadly textured, salty, and tropical while still retaining fresh acidity. If this represents the future of Spanish varieties in California, we can’t wait to see what’s next!
