Riesling Kabinett, Karthäuserhof “Karthäuserhofberg” 2020

Although technically a part of the broader Mosel Anbaugebiete, the Ruwer is worlds away as far as wine personality. It’s more of a creek than a river, more of a forest than a river, and more wild than civilized. Less than 200 hectares of vines are planted here, compared to about 10,000 in the Mosel proper, and wild horses and boars still roam.

Karthäuserhof and Maximin Grünhauser are the two most important producers in the region, and both estates make an excellent range of styles of Riesling. Karthäuserhof is unique in the world of wine for only making wine from one single vineyard, the so-called Karthäuserhofberg, making it all the more impressive that they’re able to deliver such a diverse offering of wines. While the GG is spectacular and the Spätlesen and Auslesen are guzzlers, our favorite year-in and year-out is the humble Kabinett. Only 30-35 grams of sugar per liter are in here, about two-thirds the amount of standard Kabinett these days. It’s light, airy, and penetratingly long, with aromas reminiscent of dark citrus and fresh rainfall in a forest, which is fitting given its origins. While it tastes good now, savvy collectors will stash a couple bottles in their cellar for enjoyment over the next decade.
