So quality in the wine really depends on where you are within the 358 planted acres on the hill, not to mention all other variables like farming, winemaking, vintage variation, etc. The \u003cem\u003eClos des Meix \u003c\/em\u003eis a monopole owned entirely by Comte Senard taking up less than 7 of those acres that abuts the famous Charlemagne part of the hill, which is known for white wines (you can find Grand Cru white Corton, but the vast majority is red). We find the wines from here to share a bit more of the finesse of their Chardonnay neighbors than most other sites in Corton. That being said, 2012 was a difficult vintage- \u003cem\u003ecoulure, millerandage, \u003c\/em\u003eoccasional hail, and even some ill-timed heat spikes during a mostly cool growing season all contributed to often devastatingly low yields. However, that small crop helped to concentrate flavors and intensity, and despite relatively low alcohols for modern day Burgundy the wines have a natural richness and extract to them. We are always on the hunt for Burgundy with a decade or more of age on it, but they’re exceedingly difficult to find, so we snapped this up as soon as it became available. Mendoza is blocked by the massive Andes to the west, limiting influence from the Pacific. Hot days and easy ripening meant red wines received the limelight, and today most people think of Argentine wine and Malbec as synonymous. But what about Semillon? The main grape in sweet Sauternes produces dry versions that often struggle to contain balanced acid. Not so here, where high elevation (4000 feet above sea level) and brutally intense sunlight mean full ripeness, yes, but also high acidity. Sebastian's \"Poligonos\" village bottling is aged in 500L barrels, and it does not go through malolactic fermentation. Mendoza as a whole is a massive region, made up of 18 communes hours apart from one another. El Peral—where this wine comes from—is within the Uco Valley, Mendoza's most exciting spot. Such structure may make it seem incongruous with sweet wines, but it’s actually the historical norm for wines from Montefalco in Umbria, one of Italy’s few landlocked regions. 3 million years ago the whole area was covered by sea, but all that remains today is a lake called Trasimeno to the northwest. Even with a centuries-long tradition of these wines being made in this area, the leader is a relative newcomer. Arnaldo Caprai made his money in the textiles business and founded his eponymous estate in the early 1970s, and his son Marco (who has made an appearance in the shop!) has been in charge since 1988. Both dry and sweet Sagrantino often needs age to really shine.
